Shadow Play
Sonnet — An Invocation to The Master #71
How many lives in a single one
Around the flame of love revolved,
Born in a bright pure perfection
But now all dismally devolved.
Yet, to a higher station a striving is,
In the mire to eek out the diamond,
Through all an inviolable will drives
Us to the blessed end Thou conceived.
Sound as it may the ringing alarm
Of danger at doorstep of the heart,
Beat as it may the resounding drum
Of life’s woe and many a sorry part.
Through all travails of this shadow play,
On Thy light alone my soul-gaze doth stay.
