Only Thou Knowest

Only Thou Knowest

Sonnet

How many cares in a brief life interval
And thoughts that trudge on forehead?
To how many ends limbs have laboured
And feelings that cross heart’s portal?

How many guiles must the eyes still see,
The facade that hides misshapen insides?
How many plots in a human frame resides,
Each scheme casting a shadow of ignominy?

How many songs must sing unkissed lips
Coaxing our tired apparatus of flesh?
How many litanies must the heart refresh
To wring itself with sorrow and tears?

Is life Thy reaping ground for queries to ponder at?
O Thou, only Thou knowest, only Thou knowest.
