New Night

New Night

Sonnet

A new night of unknown mint creeps in
With a swarm of moons draped in amber
Gold, in dreams they slide in like a nectar
Setting afire tremulous passions within.

Silver-girdled moonfaces of languorous heaven
Swaying by the zephyr breathed by an amorous
God, plotting a mutiny by uncoy Love’s embraces,
Burdening unwary hearts by sweetness unbidden.

The night has lost its snarl, its vain hunger,
Evicted are thoughts by the day refuted,
The sullen hours that sap are too exiled,
Only too much gladness remains to endure.

What has Thou done with the sombre night,
It shines darkly like a happy day all bright?
