Thy Design

Art Thou swayed by the oracle’s music
In ill-lit caves and the incense of entrails,
Or dost Thou incline solely to prophet-signs,
A sudden bright star, a cosmological freak?
Art Thou taken by the gaudy virtues,
The saintly show most pleasing to men,
Or dost Thou yield to the rite long done
Like some dull prayer by mindless mules?
Art Thou charmed by the priestly moods
Mumbling a second hand verse to tune,
Or by pathos of surface tears of emotion
Art moved like some stage’s lay audience?
Oh but am made as Thee, in Thy image done,
A barren soul and sheath of Thy own design!
