Twilight

Poem

Ere long since the dusks have all set,
The dull tread of twilight ambling by
Under the solemn black night sky
And all things are by a gloom beset.

Like a castaway on cave-wall marks
The passage of each meaningless day,
While the pestle of time does slay
His spirit by the dull pounding of hours.

Too above the Titan, too below the God,
This realm that none can living inhabit
Where will and thought are all forfeit
Rendering being as an animated clod.

O Agni, Knower of the hero-paths, hunter swift,
A rich harvest of obstructions I have reaped,
Splendid tangles and impossibilities grouped
For Thee to glut upon by a victorious conquest.
