Poem — An Invocation to The Master #119

Oh it sat there, mine heart timid and deferent,
Unwilling to engage a loud boisterous world,
Of industry and courage it seemed deficient
Always returning to its lair alone and secluded.

I walked as an apparition the human cities,
The bare shoreline I trod musing within,
In vain the waves brought their entreaties
To mine recluse heart ever aloof and solemn.

How was I to know Thou didst declare me
Thine since the soul from Thee ventured,
Hence no solace I drew from all I didst see
For Thou wert the immanent since of old.

But now since I have savoured Thy sublimity
My heart hath grown forward and bold,
Parting its gates to Thy inconceivable divinity,
Now it follows Thy subtle measures untold.

What heart mine that doth dare to adore
Thee O marvellous Divine beyond compare!
