Egypt

Sonnet

In the augurs of a light-touched daily cell
I move as if caught in waves of higher spell.
A force impelled breath courses through me,
Only its drift but not its end can I see.

But all is alive, a happy conspiracy in every look,
Now apt and exact is every page in every book.
I, fostered by Saraswati’s inspiration-river fertile,
Am now visited by my kindred from faraway Nile.

Egypt’s forgotten Mother sends her luminous word
No more in silence content insists She be heard.
Ideals that echoed in lofty priest, loftier pharaoh,
Have wound their way to us children of tomorrow.

There too the Mother has cast Her shining seed,
Her pent up voices in sphinx and pyramids must I heed.
