Equality

Equality

A Sonnet

Am a traveller upon an inconscient ocean,
By each slow reluctant surge am contained.
No shore in sight, only a deepened dread,
My members shrink in this dire heaven.

Am besieged by many powers, uneven
This battle of a single flame against all arrayed.
In sleep and wake is every hope betrayed,
Only to begin every cycle with new burden.

Am hedged by doubt and a hand unsure.
My mind is pecked by many ravenous beaks,
Each gore borne cries in silent shrieks.
And I move as one blind and an instinct half-true.

O Thou, who watchest all clamour with an equal eye,
Lend us Thy equality to endure all without a sigh.
