Deal Maker

Deal Maker

Sonnet

Such strange commerce seems all of this,
Daily treasures enduring for my purchase.
The known laws of commerce all here fail,
Whence this growing bounty I cannot tell.

My knowledge little could purchase a silence
That by its stillness glimpses me a heaven.
My darknesses many could purchase a light
That by their illumination upbears my sight.

My pride haughty could purchase a humility
That by its stooping can now gaze at Thee.
Of this barter am now compelled to wonder,
The aim and purpose of what Thou art after.

Mine the happy end of this unequal barter
But methinks Thou art a poor deal maker!
