Chandas

Chandas

Sonnet

Chandas, scaled rhythms of eternity,
Of dancing feet and sweeping scansion,
Binding sound to a melodic action,
Minutely structured, boundlessly free.

O breath of inspired speech, of poetry
The heart and its spirit of meaning,
Giving body to heart and its dreaming,
Infusing into all thy glowing artistry.

Learnt these from the Master of Dance,
In the thump of his drums resounding,
By strike of feet on ether rebounding,
Or rose from fire of forehead glance.

O Goddess, whatever spirit fount thy origin,
Only to thy graces make me not foreign.
