God’s Quarry

A Sonnet

There are vast endless fields of hardened mire,
A field of darkness and woe no god will enter.
The refuse of Time and all that refused light,
Singly take refuge in this den of night.

Only the Transcendent dares these pitiless realms,
That gores upon life and men and heavenward dreams.
A cry and wail pervades these nether fields,
A pain acute to shatter even formidable wills.

This is God’s quarry, the first foundation formidable,
All splendour is here amassed for reasons inscrutable.
This the ground for the forerunners reckless,
They who plunge into darkness for Him peerless.

One I saw, a formidable toiler in this God’s quarry,
Sparing no labour so His future may not tarry.
