Million-armed She

Million-armed She

A Sonnet

Durga

The titan brood marauds below for Thee
Churns Thy world in hungry glee.
Hammer and chain, and clouding doubt
By rank ruin only Thy advent brings about.

He says, “A better heaven beneath my heel,
Heed my counsel and yielding kneel”
In victorious roar hails his ruinous craft
By ruin and rampage plies his dire art.

Arrives, million-armed She of a battle-attired form
Astride a tempest with a gold-hearted calm.
Dim and faint grow the Titan and his darkness
For this is She who none can harness.

And we cry, “All worlds are Thee and all within Thine,
Efface the Titan by Thy sword O Mother divine!”
