Aaron Sorkin – Commencement Address at Syracuse University

Aaron Sorkin is the screenplay writer for The Social Network, the movie about Facebook. If you have seen the movie it should be apparent how brilliant the screenplay was. So Aaron delivered the commencement address at Syracuse University. Some quotes below-

Develop your own compass, and trust it. Take risks, dare to fail, remember the first person through the wall always gets hurt.

Don’t ever forget that you’re a citizen of this world, and there are things you can do to lift the human spirit, things that are easy, things that are free, things that you can do every day. Civility, respect, kindness, character.

You’re too good for schadenfreude, you’re too good for gossip and snark, you’re too good for intolerance.

Being the storyteller he is, Aaron does a good job of narrating the trajectory of his career and life. I gained much, really think you should read it in full here.

  1. I saw a clip of Aaron Sorkin giving a commencement address. He advised the class that it is alright to fall (fail) as long as one gets back up one more time than he/she falls (fails).

I think Mr. Sorkin’s assumption is that a person is up before taking the false step (risk) that leads him to fall. I accept this assumption wholeheartedly; any alternative becomes very convoluted.

However, it then makes it IMPOSSIBLE for a person to get back up ONE MORE TIME than he/she falls. The absolute best a person can do is to get back up an EQUAL NUMBER to the time he/she falls.

I would appreciate a reply pertaining to Mr. Sorkin’s lapse of logic on this point.

Tony – Sorkin is a storyteller, as such he could potentially convince me to give up my name if told a good enough story, logic be damned! I do get your point, sometimes logic is such a let down when it comes to raising human minds/hearts from the dumps.

  2. He WILL rise from this little boo-boo, thus making his point.

In so doing, he will EQUAL his number of falls, thus making my point.

    We both win! I
